Fabulous Finds for Fright Nite (a.k.a HaLloWeEn

halloween witch 38

Hello Peeps,

I hope you are all doing well and having fun planning for Halloween.

I thought I’d pop up a Halloween post for you today, sharing some of my favorite reads, merchandise  and other super treats, old and new.

Let me start by saying that I just LOVE Halloween; and in this house it comes second only to Christmas. We tend to decorate inside the house more than outside, but each year we add more decorations to our growing scary collection.

halloween witch16

What we have discovered is that by being savvy (very strong willed) and only buying AFTER the holiday is over, we get some amazing deals on items that otherwise would be out of our budget. I mean how do you justify spending $200 on a statue that is good for just one day each year?

So by waiting until the day after, or even a couple of days we have snagged some great deals.

halloween witch 33

For example, look at these fabulous figures that we picked up last year from Home Depot. Our Hip Witch was originally just under $100 prior to the holiday. We got her for $29 two days later! Our butler, who has animatronics and whose eyes turn red and has spooky sounds started off at $129 then went down to $64 and then he was only $44.50 when we picked him up!

I have my eye on one for next year that I am praying doesn’t sell out.

And of course Halloween is the perfect time to pick up a good horror book to read. I am a great one for horror stories, and don’t need Halloween as an excuse to scare myself silly, but I do love to match my reads to the season, and I have some classic horrors and some super new Witch and magic themed books that I want to share with you today.

halloween witch 9

First up is by my favorite author Alice Hoffman. Alice wrote the amazing Practical Magic which was made into a cult movie starring  Nicole Kidman & Sandra Bullock, way back in 1998.

IMG_1237_Facetune_25.09.2017-14:48:04

Well Alice has come up with a prequel to Practical Magic, and it’s just as fabulous. This is a perfect read if you want a nice magical story and not horror.

halloween witch 29

For true horror lovers I would have to recommend the King. Yes, Stephen King. I’ve read just about every book he has ever written and loved every one, but those I recommend most for this holiday are: #drumroll … ‘Salems Lot’, ‘The Shining’ and ‘ Night Shift’. These are my favorite cover designs too. The glossy black covers are gorgeous. I hope they bring every book out with this cover design. I finally had to donate my original King paperbacks to charity as the pages had all begun to turn yellow- I didn’t have the heart to  throw them away.

IMG_0672

halloween witch 11

Of course the true icons of Halloween/ horror has to be Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Poe’s  collected works. I love these particular copies, both by Barnes & Nobel

IMG_0671

If you’re a #bookstagrammer then you can find some delicious scented candles from the lovely Amanda North Ave Candles easy store. Amanda has candles to match many books,  including her most recent Merlot one which is the perfect companion while you are reading  Dracula.

IMG_0555

If you prefer a more contemporary Vampire and Witches story, I absolutely LOVE All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness I have the single editions and also this beautiful boxed set, which is currently $40

IMG_0675

If you like the more adult Witch themed merchandise, then how about gifting this set along with some beautiful element candles from Unicorn Manor

halloween witch 19

IMG_0674

There is ‘Earth,’ ‘Fire’, ‘Air’ and ‘Water’ along with the ‘Samhain’ one which I light most evenings. These are truly stunning to gaze at, and smell delicious. Perhaps you can cast a romance spell…

If its Art you are really looking for, then look no further than Terri Foss’s Etsy store

IMG_0670

I’ve been collecting Terri’s art for more than a year now. She has hundreds of prints available in many sizes, and all priced perfectly. Terri also regularly has original art pieces in her store, such as the one’s above. But you have to keep checking as they sell out fast. I mean, as soon as she lists them. I snagged these gorgeous ones this year.

IMG_0669

So what about some spooky Halloween reads for children? I guess  the most obvious choice would be the Harry Potter Illustrated Editions by J.K. Rowling and illustrated by Jim Kay. Any of these three editions by Jim Kay are beautiful, and really bring the stories to life. I can’t wait to one day have the completed set.

IMG_0673

And don’t forget that Amanda also has awesome  Harry Potter candles too

halloween witch 4

If you already own every Harry Potter book, then the  other children’s scary Halloween recommendations that I would strongly suggest, are any of the Goosebumps sets. They are scary fun but not too scary. I’m loving this limited edition vintage style tin of books. This would make a super present. It’s in my cart as we speak! Another by the same author is the Fear Street series by R.L Stine.

IMG_0678

I love all the retro style covers.

halloween witch3

Moving on to really scary books based on true stories.

I would suggest that The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty is a must read! I bought my copy as a scratch and dent from the Book Outlet, but I see they don’t have any left so you can find it HERE

And finally in books, I will recommend the only book that ever gave me real actually nightmares for two nights in a row (I never get nightmares). This is The Soul Collector This is apparently a true story, and it gave me the total creeps. When I say nightmares, I mean waking up in a cold sweat thinking there are Demons in the room. I shook with fear! Read it at your own risk!

So…

Moving on to some Halloween Merch.

Halloween withc 14

For some cute Halloween gifts for friends and family, how about these cute PocketBac Sanitizers from Bath and Body Works

IMG_0654.JPG    halloween witch 40.png

And these matching hand creams

IMG_0653

halloween witch 6They are priced so well too! Right now you can pick them up reduced to $3 for the hand creams and packs of five hand sanitizers for around $5

So what other merchandise can we add to our gift boxes for our Halloween loving friends and family?

Well, I figure that some spooky Halloween themed Funko POPS

IMG_0682Funko’s are usually priced between $9.99 and 12.99, although larger one’s can be more expensive. These are a few of the one’s that I have collected over the last two years. Freddie is my favorite! (Though Rowens Ghost is a close second.

halloween witch7.png

This has turned out to be a long post. I hope you have enjoyed it, and hopefully have discovered some new ideas to make your own Halloween rock! there are still a ton of things that I’d love to share with you, and if I find time in the next couple of days, I’ll add another post showing my collection of Tarot cards. I collect so many and I’d love to share some of them with you.

So until next time, thanks for reading. If I don’t talk to you before..Have a happy and safe Halloween xxx

Happy Birthday to me…Birthday Haul part one!

_BirthdayQueen_0000_1

Hi everybody, I hope you are all well and that life is good!
I’m so sorry that it’s been so long since I last posted, time has just slipped away from me. I have had words with myself and I promise to do better in future.

_BirthdayQueen_0026_27

So much has been happening lately; from Hurricane Irma, to vacationing in Colorado; life has been crazy busy here. But I’m back, and I have so much good stuff planned to post.

_BirthdayQueen_0027_28
But first, I wanted to share with you some of the goodies that I’ve hauled recently. It was my birthday last week and I was gifted so many lovely things that I can’t wait to share them with you. Also, I’m sharing goodies that I’ve recently treated myself to, as I know you’ll be interested, as many are bookish themed.
So lets get right to it shall we. I’ll link as many as I can, so you can treat yourself too, if you like them.

_BirthdayQueen_0030_31

So first off, I want to share with you two gorgeous new planners that my husband bought me. These were from Kikki.K I got to choose though. I chose the large lemon planner for all my home organization files. This can be left on my desktop and can be referred to by either of us, when we want to check up on home or work appointments. This one here is perfect, and it was also in the sale. He even had my initials monogrammed on the cover

planner closed

_BirthdayQueen_0028_29

planner yellow close up

The baby blue one is also gorgeous, and has a fine gold polka dot pattern all over it. Find it HEREplanner blue close up

I’ll be able to pop this one in my purse and carry it around with me, and I can add appointments and update throughout the day, and then I can sync it with my large planner every evening (the old fashioned way).I do have planner apps too but I just love stationary and the feel of real paper and decorative accessories. It’s kind of like reading real books versus e book readers. It’s just a preference of mine.

planner accesories

The accessories that I chose are the planner zip-lock decorated pockets, pastel bull dog style clips for adding any magazine clippings that I want to save. I love the page holder notes, and I added an Inspiration kit to add interest to the pages and to keep me motivated! Finally I purchased so bullet planner stencils and  Huhuhero fine liner pens from Amazon. So I’m totally set up!

I can’t wait to start playing with these.

planners opened

So, moving on to candles now. Now my favorite upmarket candles are most definitely those from Unicorn Manor If ever I want to truly indulge myself, I head right over to Emi’s store and pick a new candle. But luckily for me, Hubby gave me some birthday money to choose a whole bunch of candles for my birthday, so I was in candle heaven!_BirthdayQueen_0024_25

unicorn manor candles lot

I mean just LOOK at all this loveliness! #sigh

Let me show you some close ups. So first of all I took advantage of Emi’s offer to make a custom candle for me. I requested a candle to promote healing as I’m sick right now and waiting on surgery, so I hope to light it every day after my surgery to encourage fast healing. So Emi created this one for me.

healing love candle

It’s stunning and smells delicious. She created a tailored crystal candle with her signature rose scent (like her love spell candles) infused with certified organic pink and red roses, certified organic Aussie grown lavender, cherry blossom, homegrown bay leaf, Rose Quartz and magic. If only you could smell it!

Now as I have quite a sweet tooth, I also feel madly involve with her new limited edition candles in conjunction with Daisy’s milk bar. Wait until you see these!

First we have the salted caramel candle  which is infused with tiger’s eye crumble, rose and of course, her magic. It totally blows me away. It smells good enough to eat. Definitely a beautiful caramel aroma.

Next I had to order this adorable candle which is based on a childhood favorite cereal, fruit Loops  This one is infused with amethyst crumble, rose and magic. This smells really sweet, and exactly like candy.fruit loops candle

sweet raspberry candle

The next one just has to be my favorite of all as it’s raspberry and I just LOVE raspberries. Infused with rose quartz crumble, rose and Magic!

_BirthdayQueen_006_7

Finally I bought a Love spell candle, because I love it. this has the rose quartz, rose magic, and also jasmine. I purchase this one in the wax melts version too.love spell wax melt

If you are on a budget, these wax melts are perfect for treating yourself without feeling guilty afterwards. And if you want to REALLY indulge yourself, then light these beautiful candles around your bath and add some of this magical Bath crumble into your bath. This is infused with sew almond oil, rose absolute, cerfified organic rose, lavender, jasmine, rose quartz and of course MAGIC. Perfect for pampering. I can’t wait.

_BirthdayQueen_0018_19

So that’s it for part one of my birthday haul. I’ll continue with part two next week and share with you some more of my gorgeous girly gifts. I hope you’ve enjoyed sharing in my fun. Have a super week, lots of love, Sally x

_BirthdayQueen_0017_18

Welcome to my #soaksunday week 7

aqua-bath-girl-alone

Hi Guys, and welcome to my 7th Soak Sunday post.

I’ve just arrived home from an awesome Disney Cruise to the Bahamas and I have to tell you I’ve been dreaming of my soak this week. Showers just don’t cut it after a long day in the sun. But there’s not much room in a ships stateroom for a bath, so I had to be content with quick showers to cool off at the end of the day.

Seashells_06

But now I’m home and I can pull out all my pamper products and just soak myself silly for a couple of hours. Yes really!

So I begin by setting the scene for total relaxation by first lighting one of my favorite bookish candles. These are made by the lovely Amanda at North Ave Candles etsy store I have never met one of her candles that I didn’t like. Every candle has a unique fragrance that you can easily identify, and a scent which lingers deliciously afterwards To me, there is nothing worse than a diluted scent, am I right? Well Amanda’s candles have a price point that is very affordable and I also LOVE the fact that she dispatches FAST! I am so tired of waiting four to six weeks for candle deliveries. It’s my pet peeve. Kindly pop over to her etsy store where you can sigh over all her lovely products. And she’s even given me a discount code to pass on to you: Use code BCC10 at checkout for 10% off your first order!

IMG_5092

For this week’s soak I stuck completely with Lush products. They are my absolute favorites. There is so much choice. There is a bath product for every mood. I wanted something luxurious yet invigorating today, because all that lying around in the sun made me need a zing of something uplifting to wake me up and prepare me for stepping back into my real life.

IMG_5189

The cocktail I decided upon was a combination of Brightside  bubble bar along with some of my lemon macaroon style bubbleroon bar that I had left over. I didn’t go too crazy, but I topped it off with the Honey Bee bath bomb from the Lush Kitchen

IMG_5188

You have to take my word for it that this bath smelled intoxicating and my skin felt so wonderfully soft afterwards.

IMG_5190

I must be honest- the bath bomb…well, bombed! It didn’t do much at all. I wanted a show, a performance, and ‘plink, plink, fizzzzz. Never mind. It was a silent soak, and the nutrients and skin softeners still worked magnificently. Maybe I was expecting too much after all the Disney firework shows?

IMG_5191

The book I chose for this weeks’ bath and book, was by Jenny Han. I took her ‘Summer I turned pretty’ trilogy with me, as it was perfect summer beach reading material. I finished the last book on Sunday night. I love Jenny’s writing style. It’s so sweet and sassy in equal measures.

IMG_5186

I hope you have had a lovely relaxing weekend too. Don’t forget to check out my Instagram posts for more #soaksunday pictures and I always post videos on my story.

IMG_5091

Have a wonderful week. I will be popping up another post very soon.

Alice in Wonderland themed Giveaway!

Alice set 3

Hi guys,

As promised, I’m just popping up this post for you so you can see what goodies are included in my Instagram  #bookscupsandcandles8k giveaway. I do love to host a giveaway, and I think I get just as excited as my participants do. I was thrilled to see that the winners of my last giveaway, which was Beauty and the Beast themed, were from  different countries. I sent prizes to Sunny colorado here in the U.S and then to Italy and to France. I’m just hoping the European ladies get theirs soon. I can’t wait to hear from them. Anyway, here are some pictures of this giveaway, I’ll include details at the end of the post on how to enter .

alice roses

My giveaways always include a book, a cup and a candle of course, but I have fun looking for cute items that fit the theme that I have chosen. so firstly the book. I am giving you a choice of either the Hardback edition with the black and red cover or the U.K paperback edition. Your choice!

IMG_3512

The hardback here is shown without its cover as my copy was from a subscription box. Yours will be new. Or you may prefer to choose the book on the right, the U.K paperback copy

alice pocket watch

I have also included a stunning Alice themed coloring book. It’s really lovely. The cup is a really sweet mug designed by Evie Bookish. I chose the black and white monochrome design with the script on it as I think it matches so beautifully with the checkered tablecloth and also the Heartless book cover when the jacket is removed.

IMG_3514

I’m also including a new funko Pop Alice. There is a fridge magnet ‘We’re all mad here’ and this adorable library style bookmark which has kindly been donated by Amanda from North Ave Candles.  Also, in honor of my #soaksunday bath posts, I have added a Unicorn rainbow bath bubble from Lush. And what about these darling little props. These are a Disney set (yours will be new in box) that make super cute photo props. They are glittery and sparkle so nicely.

IMG_3513

There are more in the set. Alice is included, but I think she’s gone visiting today. 😉

They’re really cute. I think Disney make these sets for just about every movie that they made. I’d love to collect more.

Alice flamingo 1

I mustn’t forget the cushion cover/pillow case that I waited so long for. It is such a good size too. I’m very happy with mine. Yours is new in packet and is sealed. Again, I have chosen to keep to the monochrome colors.

IMG_3510

Cute right? There are also magnetic Alice themed bookmarks included, and I’ve added some pins/ badges to the haul. Finally I am so grateful to Amanda from North Ave candles. She has also donated March’s candle of the month ‘The March Hare’ It smells delicious!

IMG_3511

I really love Amanda’s candles, and she is the sweetest person you ever could meet. I remember placing my first order with Amanda and putting it to the back of my mind because I was so used to candle makers taking 3-6 weeks to deliver. I was totally stoked when my order arrived less than a week later! It was so refreshing! And I fell madly in love with her bookish themed candles immediately . They smell SO GOOD! You must try them.

Welcome to my #Soaksunday week 6

aqua-bath-girl-alone

I don’t know what has gotten into me lately, I think I have a touch of Spring fever. I’m organizing and cleaning, I’m laundering and sorting and falling back in love with my house all over again, even though we are still contemplating moving. Maybe it was the dark nights of winter finally passing, maybe its because the Florida heat is just right- not to hot and not too cold for me. Whatever the reason, I’m bouncing around with a big spring in my step right now. However, that is all well and good but that means that I am also throughly exhausted by the end of the day, and I’m so ready for a long soak in a hot bath.

IMG_3383

So while this is my #soaksunday post, I’ve actually been soaking all week! You see, to me, a morning shower is fine, but I am not personally a shower person. I’m in, washed, and out in less than ten minutes. It is to cleanse only. But I can stay in a bubble bath for the longest time -a couple of hours sometimes.

aqua grl turban

So this week it’s been morning showers and evening baths. I take my current read in with me (at present I’m reading the Gisha trilogy and loving it), a nice drink, (usually tea but I’m on a little health kick right now ready for my upcoming  Disney cruise in six weeks: EEK! So I’m overdosing on juices) and either play something relaxing on Amazon’s Alexa or watch a movie on my laptop by candle light. It really resets me.

This Sunday I used a combination of Lush products and a bath bomb by ‘All of the book things’ It was a lovely combination. I used ‘The Joy of Jelly’ shower jelly by Lush Kitchen, and ‘The comforter’ by Lush USA. It made for a lovely bath cocktail.

aqua-bath-flower1

Once the water was really running I added the ‘Red as Dawn‘ bath bomb for a final flourish. It has a spicy dogwood and ginger scent, and gives a clean, perky scent, which is perfect for renewing your energy levels.

IMG_3374 (1)

My read for today is the last of the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. I’m reading ‘Ruin and Rising’ and it’s SO good. I cannot wait to see how it ends. I’m sure there are many more twists and turns to come. You can get your copy of this series ( starting with ‘Shadow and Bone’ from Amazon  You will not regret it!

If you’re like me and love collecting bookish merchandise , how about this perfect candle by The Melting Library

IMG_3372

It smells delicious!

Thank you for joining me this week. I hope you enjoyed this post.

Please check in this week as I’ll be uploading detailed pictures of my latest  Instagram giveaway, which is Alice in Wonderland  themed. You’ll be able to earn extra entries with your blog comments. And who knows I mean even give an extra prize for my blog commenters like I did last month.

Take care,

Happy Valentine’s Day!

valentine-all-1Happy Valentine’s day fellow Bookstagrammers and Book bloggers! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.Whether you are married, dating or single, today is the day to show everyone some lurvvvvvv.

I love any chance to use pink in my posts, so please forgive me for overgramming today. Some of my favorite pink books are these gorgeous pink Penguins which were released to honor cancer survivors in Australia and New Zealand. I wish they’d been available here. I had to special order mine and could only buy these ones. Just a small sample of what was available. But they’re so lovely. I’d love to buy more if you know where I can get some in the U.S.

img_1822

My hubby spoiled me this year with a heart shaped balloon, heart shaped chocolates, a heart shaped ornament, a dozen red roses and a gorgeous card too. He really surprised me. Such a sweetie! =)

valentine-pink-splodge2

I couldn’t resist posting some stunning pink bookish merch too. I love this gorgeous cushion design and the lovely mug that I ordered from Red Bubble by one of my favorite artists Nyxsullivan

img_1823Aren’t they gorgeous?

rectangle-stroke-pinksblues-1

And talking of gorgeousness. Have you discovered these amazing bookish candles from

Amanda at North Ave Candles

She sells the most amazing candles that not only smell delicious, but look so cute and what I just love is that Amanda ships quicker than any other candle store I’ve used. One of my pet peeves is that every other bookish candle store that Ive bought from take four to six weeks to deliver the goods. I mean my money is paid to them instantly, so Why don’t they have stock? Amanda ships right out to you FAST! and her candles smell as delicious as they look. This one is based on the book ‘The Secret Garden’ and is is beautiful!

img_1826

I love the old fashioned library card labels. And Amanda has just started making badges/buttons and bookmarks to match. Kindly keep checking back and I’ll post some pictures this week on my Instagram account

valentine-pink-champ

Finally, how do you like poetry? I recently picked up some contemporary poetry when I purchased this darling book : ‘The Universe of us’ by Lang Leav  The only poetry I’d read previously had been quiet limited, with my absolute favorite being ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. I used to have that on my fridge door when I first emigrated here and was incredibly homesick for my family and friends back in Britain.

img_1827I hope you’ve had a wonderful Valentine’s day, whatever you’re doing.

Welcome to Soak Sunday week three…

Welcome to the third week of my #soaksunday.aqua-bath-girl-alone

Since we were talking about contemporary YA books yesterday, I decided to feature this  book by Chelsea Sedoti. The book is called ‘The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett’. The synopsis reads:

img_1293

Hawthorn wasn’t trying to insert himself into a missing person’s investigation. Or maybe she was. But that’s only because Lizzie Lovett’s disappearance is the one fascinating mystery their sleepy town has ever had. Bad things don’t happen to popular girls like Lizzie Lovett, and Hawthorn is convinced she’ll turn up at any moment-, which means the time for speculation is now.

So Hawthorn comes up with her own theory for Lizzie’s disappearance. A theory way too absurd to take seriously…at first. The more Hawthorn talks, the more she believes. And what better way to collect evidence than to immerse herself in Lizzie’s life? Like getting a job at the diner where Lizzie worked and hanging out with Lizzie’s boyfriend. After all, it’s not as if he killed her- or did he?

aqua-grl-nitestand

This seems like a cute read, and perfect for curing my book hangover from ‘The Black Prism’ which I finally finished yesterday (oh wow you need to read Brent Weeks’ work)

So for this week’s feature, I used all Lush products. I started with a few lines of ‘Bubbly’ then crushed up yuzi and cocoa bubble bar, added some Refresher shower jelly and topped it off with a Cyanide Pill from Lush kitchen in the U.K. They ship worldwide and take pay pal.

img_1282

img_1287

It was delicious, and yes I remembered to heat up the water first this week, lol!

The cyanide pill fizzes SO LOUD. It all smelt so citrusy and fresh.

img_1284

My skin feels so soft now.

The ambience was provided by my Belle Leaky Candle (sorry can’t add link as they seem to have disappeared)

duckie

Bookmark is by the amazing Ribonitachocolat Etsy Store.

I’m all set up to start the week now. I feel fresh and cozy. I’m going to make a pot of chamomile tea and pop upstairs to watch my lovely husband while he lays the floor in my new ‘Library’ room. I’m so excited. All the walls are painted, the floor will be finished tonight and then I just need him to pop some new baseboards on and we will be ready to move in all my bookcases. I truly can’t wait!

What are your favorite bath products?

Have a lovely day,

Sally xx

Welcome to my very first soak Sunday!

I am a girl who loves to take a long hot bubble bath as often as possible. The tub is my ‘Me time’, my escape, my sanctuary from the world. So when I take a bubble bath, I pull out all the stops.

img_0894

I mean I prepare.

I’m talking about finding the perfect candle, the perfect cup and flowers and cupcakes and my latest book. I choose the most relaxing music that suits my mood, and I wallow in prettiness for hours.

card4

Now a couple of days ago I was looking for inspiration for my Instagram pictures. Sometimes that well of inspiration runs dry- the muse is MIA.

lilac-girl-alone

So as I was thinking this, my thoughts led from ‘well-is-dry’ to ‘Soak Sunday’ and so my new weekly hash tag was born.

img_0886-1

Now bathing beauty addicts are not new. I follow so many beautiful feeds that have helped to inspire my bathing ritual for a long time now. (Kindly check out my Instagram and see who I follow for details) I often toyed with the idea that it may be fun to start a new feed to share my bathing addiction, but the truth is, I love my book account so much that I don’t want to be distracted from the love that I pour into it. I figured there must be a way to incorporate my other loves into my book feed. And the more I thought about it, the more fun ideas that I had. Playing on the popular tag of #socksunday I came up with #soaksunday I could still share my love of books, cups and candles, but also my love of Lush, and Bath & body Works, The Body Shop etc.….

img_0892

I really hope that some of you guys take up the tag and play along. Please let me know what you think about it. Any ideas are most welcome.

planner-girl-clipart-28

Right now I’m reading ‘Heartless” by Marissa Meyer.

img_0889

This is a really fun read. I’m about half way through it and thoroughly enjoying it. I would describe it as a fairytale mashup of Alice in Wonderland, and it’s almost as funky as the original. Many of your favorite characters are there in cameo roles, others taking on larger parts like ‘Hatta’ Our protagonist is Catherine or Cath. Cath is the daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of the city of Hearts. Her parents are determined that she will marry the King and be the next Queen of Hearts. But Catherine has other ideas. She wants to make her childhood dream of owing her own bakery come true. Catherine is the best baker in Hearts. Everybody loves her lemon tarts, her macaroons and her pumpkin pie…Ahhh yes, The pie… and this is where the story gets complicated.

We have lots of twists and turns, some love interests, some villains, some quirky characters who will make you laugh out loud. It is a riot! I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

Sharing my Love of Candles….Part One

img_3214

The strange purple swirls are my TV colored lights. They don’t photograph well, lol.

I have been collecting candles for as long as I can remember.Right back from being a little girl and my mommy buying me the Avon ones at Christmas. Friends and family have been buying me them for my birthday, Christmas and many events in-between ever since. Then there are the candle sales between all these events; and the result is a home full of pretty scented candles and a welcoming and soothing atmosphere.

I receive lots of direct messages on my Instagram account about my candles: usually asking which I like the best, which I don’t etc. So I thought I’d write some candle posts for you.I have so many candles, I’ve realized that I need to split my  posts up, otherwise they’ll feel like lectures and we don’t need any more lectures in our lives do we? So let’s make this fun and take them in bite sized pieces.

we start with this as post number one.

This post is focusing on my Yankee candle collection. I will introduce reviews on my bookish candles very soon, but let’s get these big guys out-of-the-way first, by way of two posts and a ‘Top Ten Candle countdown’

Now I’ve collected this brand for a long time, so I do have a lot.I’m talking about at least as long as I have lived in this country which is seven years. Also I never pay full price when purchasing for myself. Sign up with Yankee Candle and they send special offers, coupons etc to you. And be sure to sign up for their catalog as they have ‘scratch and sniff’ pages (which they call ‘scratch & smell’ though it doesn’t have such a cute ring to it)

So lets start with my shades of Blue.

img_5253The ‘Blues’ comprise of ‘Splash of Rain, Beach Walk’, Crisp Morning Air’, ‘Storm Watch’ and ‘Blueberry Scone. My favorite of the blues is ‘BLUEBERRY SCONE’. It is Gorgeous! It is strong enough to fill a large room with its delicious fresh-out-of-the-oven scent, and I can smell the blueberries with no problem. It is not at all overpowering, but it is an unmistakable bakery scent. I will say more about this candle later.

Now ‘Storm Watch’ is delicate, and is intended to give the scent reminiscent of that of someone walking into the house after being in the rain (don’t we all love that scent?). The scent is nice, not overwhelming. It doesn’t stand out though. Small rooms only, I suggest.

‘Beach Walk’ is not as strong. In my humble opinion, it smells of very little at all. I wouldn’t purchase it again. Perhaps its best use would be in a smaller room, such as an entry or mudroom. Very disappointing. Lets move ahead.

Now I really like ‘Crisp Morning Air’. While it’s quite a delicate scent, it’s really lovely: rainwater, dew, freshness personified, and reminds me of having the windows thrown open on a fine Spring morning.I always used to do this when living in England. Every morning, whatever the weather, I would throw open all the windows in my house to welcome in the fresh air, while I wandered from room to room, cleaning. I can’t do that here, sadly. If I do, it is like opening an oven door. I’m still not used to it!

Okay, so my least favorite of the blues is ‘Splash of Rain’. Its label suggests a scent similar to that of ‘Crisp Morning Air’ but it is much more flowery, with a very strong Daffodil fragrance. I like flowery, daffodil fragrances, but only if that’s what I’m looking for. I believe this is mislabeled. Yes, the label shows the flowers so I expected floral, but where is the splash of rain?

Are you still with me? Good! Then we will go onto the ‘Yellows’.

img_5250So here we have ‘Daffodil’, ‘Flowers in the Sun’, ‘Bakery Air’, Lemongrass & Orange’ and ‘Winter Glow’. You will see that I’ve used so much of ‘Winter Glow’ over the winter. It is gorgeous.Delicate, clean and fresh. i will be replacing it this year for sure.

Daffodil. Now this is VERY strong. Even before you light it, it is strong. I like this in my kitchen. It is bright and cheerful and is very good for covering up cooking smells too (always a plus) The picture shows Daffodils, the name is Daffodils, so I expected Daffodil scent- not a splash of rain 😉 ha, ha.

‘Flowers in the Sun’ is lovely. Floral of course, strong enough to inhale as you walk past, but not at all overpowering. If you like a milder floral scent then I’d recommend you purchase this rather than the Daffodil.

‘Bakery Air’ is…simply…WOW. I must have a sweet tooth, there seems to be a pattern with my favorites, as they all seem to be food scented. I’d say freshly baked cookies, or even raw cookie dough. Yum. It’s one I use sparingly because I want it to last forever!

Finally in the yellows, I have Lemongrass & Orange. Another huge hit with me. Self explanatory, it does what it says on the label. I love citrus candles. They always make the place smell freshly scrubbed. I feel energized and this scent never fails to lift my spirits, even on the darkest of days. This candle is in my top ten for sure.

Next we have the ‘Reds’….

img_5235

For some reason I don’t have too many reds. I’ve figured with the Yankee Candles that anything with ‘Roses’ in the title will always remind me of old ladies. Sorry. I love Roses, and I love old ladies but no more Rose candles for me. The scent is actually disturbing. Let me think…perhaps in a sunroom?… no. Still disturbing.

Now ‘Pink Peony’ is slightly less disturbing, but only slightly. looks pretty, but don’t light it…ever (if you want to stay popular with your friends)

Moving swiftly on to ‘Strawberry Lemon Ice’. Yes I like it, okay so I LOVE it, but its nothing to do with the fact that it’s a food candle. Honest. It sparkles. Really. So cute. It smells sweet, candy, popsicle, sticky, cotton candyish. (hold on I need to move those candles out of my eye line …yes the Rose and Peony ones) They worry me. But for certain Lemon Ice is a hit.

Finally in the reds, is ‘Line Dried Cotton’. What can I say except I was suckered by the name.It smells of… nothing much. Who named this? Take them off their medication, fast. My opinion? I wasted my money.

So that’s end of part one. I hope you enjoyed it. I enjoyed sitting down and sniffing all my candles all over again. I feel quite light headed now, but in a good way.

Tomorrow I will be driving two hours from here and doing something really exciting. I can’t wait to tell you. More candle posts soon. Right now I’m going to wash my hair dye out. I should have done it a half hour ago, so goodness knows what it is going to look like.

I wish you ll a lovely day. Curl up in your book nook, light a candle and drift to other worlds.

lots of love,
